Add /var and /etc to CrashPlan Backups for Linux

By | 2013/04/10

By default, CrashPlan excludes directories such as /var or /etc. However, it is easy to add these as directories to selectively backup. I’ll show you how!

First, edit the following file:

$ sudo nano /usr/local/crashplan/conf/my.service.xml

Delete line 217 under the Linux section that says: <pattern regex=”/var/”/>

Optionally you may wish to delete the line for /etc as well to make that available for backups.

Save the file, the restart crashplan

$ sudo /etc/init.d/crashplan restart

Now when starting CrashPlan, it is possible to selectively choose directories inside /var to backup with CrashPlan.
