Install latest Iceweasel in Linux Mint Debian Edition

By | 2011/09/10

Linux Mint Debian Edition currently rolls its own Firefox, which can take time to get packaged to the latest version. And being based on Debian Testing, the Testing version of Iceweasel is often not the latest and greatest version for those looking at upstream alternatives. That is where the Debian Mozilla team steps in!

To use the latest Iceweasel from the Debian Mozilla team in LMDE, check this out!

1. Edit your sources list:

$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Add this line to the bottom, then save:

deb squeeze-backports iceweasel-release

2. Now grab the gpg key:

$ wget -O- -q | gpg --import

Then import into your keyring:

$ gpg --export -a 06C4AE2A | sudo apt-key add -

3. Now do an apt-get update:

$ sudo apt-get update

4. Then install the latest iceweasel:

$ apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel

    I followed the steps mentioned above but when I run the fourth step, it showed me an error:
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
    distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
    or been moved out of Incoming.
    The following information may help to resolve the situation:

    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    iceweasel: Depends: xulrunner-6.0 (>= 6.0.2-1~bpo60+1) but it is not going to be installed
    E: Broken packages

    Late reply ..

    His issue is caused by not having the debian backports repo to pull in the required deps …

    Add debian backports to sources.list and then try it again …

    deb squeeze-backports main
