Encrypt web traffic through ssh tunnel

By | 2010/06/22

How do I tunnel my web browsing through an encrypted ssh connection?

This requires a remote linux server which you have ssh access!

This is useful when you are roaming on public wifi and want to keep your traffic encrypted and safe!

Just issue this command to login to your remote server:

ssh username@yourserver.com -D 9000

Just leave that ssh window connected and running.

Now in your web browser, configure the network settings to connect through a socks proxy. Proxy server is localhost, port 9000.

Done! Now all of your web browsing is tunneled over ssh.
